I could see this as several things. I could see it by what I literally interpret it as, as Ricky looking onto the horizon in the middle of a vast desert with mountains in the distance. Yet I also see a symbolic case also...
I wonder if I am crazy to think of it as also a way to view life, being one that feels to some extent pointless and not worth any struggle...and yet for whatever reasons(s) we go on in some way. We may go on in inaction, we may go on trying to pursue goals, short and long term, we may succeed in them, we may not, and even in the case of success... one asks would the goal(s) be worth pursuing...perhaps contrary to appearances, life may not be so pointless after all, it’s what you make of it. Although I also argue that life also to an extent molds one as much as one tries to mold life.
I'd describe examples of some of my own cases but then I may lose focus, so I'll not say them... for now...maybe.
At least to me it brings up this question, but leaves the answer in the wide open, the answer being if it's worth it or not, assuming you even manage to get to the goal of whatever the goals are. What it does seem to point out with some certainty, is that trying to reach a goal is far from easy, and requires effort, determination and endurance, if not several other things I can't think of. I guess the light could be seen as a goal or a collective (is that even a word?) of goals to reach, with Ricky representing an every-person seeing this goal on ahead, and perhaps to set out to reach it.
I guess an upside to this is that although we can't see a lot of what's behind him, it could also hint at being that as it stands he has come a long way, but still has a long way to go, but at the least he's there and not at the beginning, where-ever the beginning is, which could also apply to a lot of us (such as with my art, I've come a LONG way... but I still have a long way to go), whatever paths we pick could be long ones, but perhaps it's the only way one can do to reach their goals.
Far as the piece itself, I really can't find much to critique as it seems to have an intent of focus if I could say that right... that being Ricky against the background being the desert and mountains ahead, I say what you have done has at done it's job of getting the point across on at least a literal level of Ricky being set against a vast landscape, and given a point can be seen to make one think, whatever they may think about (for my case, life and if there’s a point to anything or not). If I had to summarize what I felt in one word, it would be awesome.
Can't think of anything else (without going a bit off I mean), except again, awesome.
